I've been really happy with
SF Guitar Works and
Collopy Guitars, both in San Francisco.
SF Guitar Works do amazing work, but they have a backlog and can be pretty pricey. However, once you pay for a setup, you can bring it back anytime for a free adjustment. This is the only place I'll take my Lull.
Rich Collopy is a great mad-scientist type. He has done thousands of setups. I find him much faster and a bit cheaper than Guitar Works. He is pretty opinionated about how to set up a bass, and he'll do what he thinks is right, but I find that I agree with him most of the time. I've always been happy with his work and I've had him do everything from minor setups to some major surgery
Anyone else tried Steven Berk? I've seen him advertise on CL before.
) but I usually use Gary Willis' website to set up what I need myself. There are a few small shops around here I trust, but that would be crazy for you to pick so far away.
