I need a bit of help with setting up

OK, I know the mechanics of doing a set up and I've been doing them for a while. My trusty old basher (Ibanez P) is running exactly as I want it: The action is high enough to let me get into a real groove with no fret buzz (unless that's what I want and I dig in ever so slightly more). It plays great at both ends of the neck, and the slap is sweet.

I've been trying to get to the same place with my SUB 5 and I just can't quite find it. Same as I've always done before I've set the relief in the neck so that, with the strings held at the 1st and 15th frets there is just over a credit card's distance between the 8th fret and the strings. Then I dropped the saddles so that there is no buzz anywhere on the neck. Playing either fingure style or with a pick below the 7th fret is fine, but above that the strings feel way too high and I have to push down much more than I would like. Even worse, no matter where I play, slapping just feels loose and floppy. The same with tapping.

So, have you guys got any tips you want to pass on? Any tricks that have sorted this sort of thing out for you.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Cheers

You may need to use a thin shim at the end of the neck to set the neck back at a slight angle. A thin sheet of wood veneer or some hard plastic (I've used the plastic lid from a coffee can once) could do it. It's easily reversible so it's worth a try. It doesn't take much thickness to produce a large change in angle.

You'll have to fool around with string height again after you do this and perhaps even the truss rod. Eventually it'll all work out.

before shimming i'd try removing some relief in the neck and to see what it does...
