If you're just starting out and learning, have a pro set it up for you first. That way you'll know what a properly set up bass should look and feel like.
When you get your newly set up bass home, take a good read through the sticky posts on setting up the bass, and observe what they're talking about on your pro set up bass.
When the bass needs another set up (prob after you change to a different brand or gauge of strings , or if you live somewhere that climate will cause changes) then go ahead and try setting it up yourself.
