I need a nut for a Hamer XT Series Chaparral 12-string bass. I've looked everywhere for one and can't find one.

Hi.

^LOL.

Seriously though, IIRC it's just a regular nut (it's been a loooong time since I saw one).

Pre-made nuts are pretty much non-existant, all of them are cut to size.

If You don't know how to cut one, take it to a shop. I prefer GraphTech plastic as the nut material, but anything hard enough will do.

BTW, what's wrong with the existing one? CA and baking soda can be used to build up the slots if they're worn or cut too deep.

Regards
Sam

Thank you so much. I don't know how to cut one, and I wasn't sure what to do or where to go.

The existing one got cracked and half broke off. :/

You'll either be paying to have one made, or learning All About Nuts, yourself.

You're welcome. And welcome to TalkBass, forgot that from the previous post.

Like Pilgrim said, nut material can be purchased on-line. Almost all the music shops I know of have some raw blanks also.

The list of usable materials is endless. Some prefer metals (steel/stainless, brass aluminium, titanium), some organic materials (ivory, "normal" bone, wood etc.), some modern plastics that have graphite inpregnated to them and some just plain plastic.

I prefer reinforced carbon-inpregnated plastic that GraphTech manufactures under several brand names. It's cheap for the quality it is, durable and I've never had any binding- or wearing out problems with it.

I'd suggest starting with some hardwood or plastic in hand when experimenting, a piece of ebony or a tooth brush handle is probably free material so it won't break the bank.

As for cutting the nut, a set (or just the round one) of needle files is all that is basically needed for the bass strings. The octave string slots are more difficult, but I for example used to cut v-slots on all my guitars back when I was starting out a few decades ago . Now the V isn't optimal, but it'll get You pretty close.

Regards
Sam
