I need a new nut. Some advice?

So I want to make a new nut for my MIM JazzV because the low side by the G string has a chip out of it and I've switched back to rounds from tapes.

It's not a huge deal but my local guitar shop sold me a 1/4" blank instead of a 1/8" and told me to sand it down to thickness and then shape it.

They're an authorized Fender dealer so I took their word for it but since I think I overspent on the blank (almost $20) and don't want to take it back if I don''t *have* to I just want to double check if I'm on the right path. Searches here didn't come up with much and google searches only got me nuts for acoustics and gibsons/martins.

I have a belt sander and palm sander which I was going to thickness with and a dremel which I was going to shape with.

Should I thickness first and then shape, or shape the nut and then take one side down to have a thinner tongue fit in the groove to give me a wider nut that still fits my bass?

Should I just take it back and get a 1/8" blank?

Sounds like they were being lazy and just sold you the thicker nut because the didn't have the correct one and didn't feel like ordering it. You shouldn't have to do that much work. Just take it back and tell them you want the correct part for the job.
