I need a new Stingray neck

Sign in to disble this ad
My neck on my stingray is way messed up. I got it for super cheap because of the way the neck had warped, but now it's gotten pretty unplayable because of it. The neck is basically shaped like this ___^____. There's a bump around the 5th fret that can't be taken care of. It causes a lot of buzz and the strings sound dead. After I put new strings on it after two days it sounds like the strings have been on for years.

So. I need a new neck.

I was thinking of just getting a new standard stingray neck but then I starting thinking about ordering a different kind of neck from a company like Warmoth or something.

Has anybody experimented with this? I don't know the first thing about necks and different woods with different tones and all that. Can anybody give me some advice on what to do here? Is it worth it to order a custom neck for it?

You could get a graphite stingray replacement from Status. Sometimes stingray necks pop up on ebay. I have an extra sabre neck at the moment but I am keeping it because it is fretless. got it on ebay for like $350.

I just checked out the Status website and it looks really nice. I used to have a Modulus and I love the feel of graphite necks. Do you have a stingray with a Status neck? What do you think of it?

IMO, a different neck would crush the resale value of your Stingray. The exception to this would be the graphite neck that Status offers (I'm not sure if anyone else makes them for Stingrays).

It's expensive, but I'd imagine if you already like graphite necks that you would be pleased with the results. I've never had the pleasure of using a bass with a graphite neck, but I've seen a few Stingrays on TB with those particular necks.

I have a stingray with a Moses graphite neck, it is a super neck IMO.
Satin finish on the back, very stable, sounds great.
A little heavier than the original, so get a set of hipshot Utralight tuners to re balance the neck so it won't dive.

PM me if you have more questions.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Moses! I knew someone else made them, too.

contact EB. they ahve been more than accomodating to me in the past ten years. They sent me a new pre-amp when mine craped out no questions asked. I thin they were just suprised that one of their instruments had a flaw. Warmouth necks will not fit because they use 4 bolts as opposed to the Rays/ Five. Also, have you considered having a luthier refret the neck. that might be cheaper than a new one.

Based on his OP, I believe he's well aware of the EB option (which is why he mentioned that he has considered getting a new EB neck), but is exploring other possibilities.

According to your description, there is a hump in the neck at F5. Assuming that loosening the truss rod does not allow the neck to relax, there are a number of things that can be done to remedy the problem. The neck may respond to clamping. Or it may take the addition of heat to clamps. Planing the fingerboard and refretting might also create an excellent playing surface.

Have you taken the instrument to a professional for an evaluation? If so, what did they tell you? If not, do so. You may be surprised at how economical the fix may be.

+1 to the Status neck.

I guy I work with has one on his 'Ray and it is fantastic! I'm almost tempted to put on on my SR5, but don't have the cash.

Thanks for the responses! I'm thinking about going for the Status but I really don't know much about how the sound of graphite differs from the sound of wood.

I go for a really growly, bright sound. How dramatic would the sound difference be if I got the graphite neck?

Status necks are awesome... I love my 'ray with the graphite neck

It's a decision you wont regret...

To me it brings out a slight clarity that the stock neck didn't have, but its not a drastic change really....

The Status neck looks like a great option.

Okay so I think I'm going to go with a Status neck. I just have a couple more questions....

If I was to order the plain MM4 replacement neck from the site, how easy would it be to change out the necks? Also, my band is going on a summer tour starting on May 18th and I would need to have it before then. If it's coming from England, would it be here in time?

graphite necks are superior for going on tours where you will play in different conditions. The neck will not move.

I have a stingray status neck on a bass. It sounds different but great.
