I think I need a new truss rod adjuster nut (Burns content)

I have a Burns Barracuda, a 30-inch scale six string. The hex socket of the adjuster nut seems to be stripped, so I can't adjust neck relief. I sent off an e-mail to Burns a week or so ago asking for advisement. I would like to purchase a new part to replace the stripped part, either directly from Burns, or--if they say that the part is generic and easily obtainable--from Stew Mac or whoever. I haven't received a reply from Burns. So I don't really know what to do at this point. Any suggestions?

Three suggestions:

1) Call Burns on the phone and ask them. Their phone number is + 44 ( 0 ) 208 7833 638 (definitely a long distance call from Sacramento).

2) Take the nut to someone who does guitar repair and say "Have you got one of these?"

3) Find a wrench that's just a little too big to fit the hex socket, and file it down until it just barely fits.

4) Take the nut to an old-fashioned hardware store, and ask the oldest guy you can find "Can you tell me what this thread is?" Then call Stew-Mac and buy a nut with that thread in it.

Okay, four suggestions-- I got carried away.

Ed

1) I can't make international calls from my cell phone. And I have no landline at home.

2) I took the guitar (as I can't remove the nut) to someone who does guitar repair, and they said to e-mail Burns and ask them. So that's what I did and got no reply.

3) I suppose I could do that but I am not confident in my ability to do it, I don't have a workshop at home so I'd have to acquire the right hand tools to be able to do it, and then it would be trial and error, and I wouldn't want to strip the hex socket any further. Improvised solutions like this are what I've traditionally tried in the past, and maybe 75% of the time I've ended up making the problem worse.

4) I have no way to remove the nut to do that, as no hex key will fit properly to enable me to loosen it at all, let alone loosen it completely.

I think I'm going to try and find some UK luthiers via Google who claim to service Burns instruments, and contact some of them...

So maybe a decent local luthier could extract the truss rod nut and then determine what kind would be needed to replace it?

Well, it's just hopeless then. Just ship your bass to me, and I'll dispose of it for you.
