I unscrewed my neck

Hello!

I unscrewed the neck on my bass and some splinters fell out. Is this normal? Is the neck okay? It screwed back fine, nice and tight.

I unscrewed my neck? ...... Was that song done by CSN?
I remember they did one song about almost going to the barber..... is it on the same album?

Maybe they're not splinters but neck shims.
If they are 'splinters' don't worry about it. Most 'production' basses are made in such a hurry they might not have cleaned out the neck cavity before slapping on the neck. If they're shims you've got you're work cut out for you getting them back in the right place.
But when ever removing a neck lye the bass on a towel on a table and remove all parts slowly, placing screw in a dish and remembering where everything goes.

Slightly larger than sawdust?

There is no way those were shims :P

You've actually turned your bass into a WMD now, police seizure is imminent unless you replace ALL the sawdust you removed.

^^This ...^^

It's even worse than tearing the tags off your pillows.

On a more serious note, I get so nervous about wood screws all the time since wood is a soft material. I just screwed the neck back into place, nice and tight with a screwdriver (not overly tight... just... until it stopped), should be no worry right? No risk of worn out holes?

Yes, I do realize I am super paranoid when it comes to gear, especially when considering it's a $300 Squier bass...

You loosened the strings first ... right? I had to ask cause there was another guy here that didn't, and pop!

Why did you take the neck off anyway?

Just wanted to check out the neck pocket. And yes I loosened the strings of course

Anyways, I read somewhere that you can improve sustain a bit if you tune the strings to correct tuning, slightly loosen all the neck screws and then screw them back so that the string tension pulls the neck tight into the neck pocket. I did that and I don't imagine there would be any harm.
