I want a black Fender Mustang

There are two ways that I can acquire a black Fender Mustang. I can spend a $1000 and buy a used one from Ishibashi or buy a used one stateside and have it refinished for a total of $800. Is retaining the original finish worth it? Thanks for your input.

Do you plan to resell it at any point? If so, the refinishing will likely affect resale value. That's about all I can think of.

It depends on the Mustang. If it's vintage, yes keep the original finish, refinishes kill vintage value. If it's a reissue, refin away, I don't think they'll gain a whole lot of value.

What's a forearm and belly contour?

The ideal would be to find a re-issue with some serious cosmetic issues for around $300, then I could bring the cost of a refinish project down to around $600.

Or buy a Bronco for $150 and outfit it with Mustang bridge, pickguard and pickups. Should be under $500.

They're the contours like the Jazz Bass has.

As I noted above, the differences between the Mustang and Bronco that really count are pickup, pickguard and bridge...so it depends on what you want the headstock to say.

I used a Bronco body, Musicmaster bridge modded for top-loading the strings, a Mustang RI neck and control plate, J knobs, cut forearm and belly contours, installed and EMG SA pickup, and recut the Bronco pickguard for the control plate. I haven't painted it black...yet:
