I want to replace the tuning machines on my bass (Gotoh content)...

...and as you can see the "A" and the "D" machines are very close together. My first choice, Hipshot Ultralights, will not work, because the tuner as a rounded bolt at the bottom. I am very sure these are Gotoh GB7's, and was wondering if I replaced them with res-o-lite GB707's would they have the same footprint?

In many cases they will, but if you look at the space between the top two (the A and D) tuning machines that is the issue. The shaft at the bottom of the tuners on the Gotohs are flat. On the Hipshots they are rounded, which does not allow enough space for both tuning machines to drop in.

I circled that part I am talking about in red below.

Anyone? Will the GB707 have the same footprint as the GB7's?

I would think you can angle the tuners slightly away from each other. Shouldn't affect actual tuning.

Hard to see from the picture, but the headstock is concaved to match the body (it is an Acacia), so that probably isn't an option.
