Ibanez ArtStar Tuning Woes

Sign in to disble this ad
My friend gave me her 6 string electric guitar in the hopes that I can fix a tuning problem for her. In short, she says the guitar doesnt stay in tune. I concur.

I do not even know where to begin to try to fix the problem, or if this is a problem that can be fixed. (its a cheap $150 guitar)

I did the action and intonation but she still wont stay in tune. What can hopefully be done to remedy the situation? Never had this problem on a bass, so its something new to me.

I have a new Ibanez Artcore that is kind of a challenge to tune. The tuners seem fine, I wonder about the tailpiece on mine. I think I will replace it with a typical gibson style, the strings come off the tailpiece at a weird angle that just seems to ask for trouble. It's a cool guitar tho

I have the older, 34" scale model Artcore bass. No problems tuning with either the factory supplied round wounds or the Thomastic flats I put on soon after getting it. Is yours the new shorter scale model?

Does the guitar have a whammy? One of my friends has a bass with a whammy (the make/model escapes me now) and he has a problem with tuning before he tightened the whammy.

Make sure the strings are not getting stuck in the nut, this is a very common cause of tuning instability. It might be a good idea to use a little graphite (pencil lead) as a lubricant.

I'll bet the strings aren't installed correctly and they're slipping on the tuners. Pull 'em all, re-install them correctly so the strings are locked in place on the tuners, and I'll bet the problem disappears.
