| Ibanez SR Dk Brown open-grained neck: Sand small area & restore?

On an Ibanez SR496 (6-string), with 5-piece laminated neck, after several years of different shinkage-rates, in one area of the back of the neck, one of the layers "sticks-out" about 1mm - enough to be annoying. The finish is dark brown, very open-grained. Unlike my Fender, the Ibanez does not have the smooth polyurethane finish you'd see on a Fender. It looks more like a Warwick finish.
I'd like to sand-down the layer that "sticks-out"; very easy to sand down, since it isn't more than a couple of inches long, along the edge of only one side of one layer of the 5-piece laminate.
Question: After sanding-down, what's the best way to "touch-up" the finish. Wax?
I've got some brown-stained floor wax I could use. I'm not a "gigging musician", just an aging bass-player that hardly ever picks-up his axes anymore. Just don't want to do anything TOO stupid since I really try to keep my Ibanez (and Fender MIM Jazz) in good shape...
