I'm experiencing alot of fret buzzing...

Could this be that my neck is warped a bit? I'm using a Squier Vintage Modified 70's jazz bass. Not stock string... Ernie Ball strings. I'm pushing down on the strings really hard just to not get buzz, but man oh man is it starting to hurt! And below the 12th fret is another story It's almost like playing a Bee. Any advice?

sounds like you need a set up....a neck adjustment coupled with saddle adjustment.

What do you mean by warped? if you mean a slight bow in the neck under the strings that is normal and how a neck is supposed to be adjusted. You just need a proper setup done on the bass. A setup can make or break a bass.

You definitely need to have someone who knows what they're doing take a look at the bass. Learning or teaching yourself on a bass that already has problems is problematic. Much better to have some idea what you're doing and needing to accomplish before hand.

I'd agree with the others, You need a set up. If it still buzzes after it's been set up, It could be a fret problem.

What do they do in a "setup" exactly.

They adjust your truss rod, bridge, pu height, and intonation.

Adjust truss rod if needed (you need it), set string height (bridge saddles) and set intonation.

Do you have to push down really hard on the 1st & 2nd frets? Sounds like a nut slot issue, as well...

Yes, by all means, spend the money for a decent setup...you'll thank yourself...
also, you should learn (do the research and understand how everything interplays) about setting up yourself...
It took me a very long time to get good at setups, but how convenient to be able to tweak your own instruments to the exact way that you want them to play.

This is where people will play a bass with a bad setup and then proceed to say that said bass brand is crap because it plays like garbage when all it needs to be a great bass is a proper setup.

Arrow Squire set up

I have a brand new Squire $200......Doesn't need a set-up yet. I paid for a set up on my Jazz bass , under $50...plus new strings.....I don't mess around with my instruments myself. Suppose I could but, I'd rather not. Also had my new Prs guitar set up, it had some fret buzzing and when it shipped in they included a neck truss bar ,,,left it alone and the same shop did it for around 70.00 (strings included) ...
Listen to the other comments, they are right as usual......

A thorough setup should address nut height, neck relief, bridge height, intonation, pickup height, and a host of other issues. It's worth doing it right.

At the risk of getting myself in trouble: you can take a look at my shop's website, as it's got a bunch of tech articles on there, and a daily blog about work that goes on in the shop. You may find it informative: sfguitarworks.com
