Increasing Scale length?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm custom ordering a neck from warmoth.com, but the binding I want requires that my neck be 21 frets instead of the 20 frets that my bass has. The addiction of the extra fret will result in increasing my scale by about half an inch. Is there anything I should worry about when increasing my scale length, even by an amount as small as that?

[It won't increase the scale length. An extra fret is just added to the end of the board.

Just to back it up, the poster above me is correct. Adding more frets doesnt increase neck scale length unless the neck is longer. Warmoth and others just extend the fretboard.

To answer the question, yes there is stuff you should worry about, but not the scale length (assuming the instrument was 34").

The snags you may face is fitting the neck's overhang with the pickguard or other features that are near the neck pocket.

Okay, that makes more sense (and is quite a relief to me), but I would like to make it a point to mention that the scale length is 36". I'm not sure whether it would make a difference in this question, I just figured I should mention it. Unless I measured wrong, it's definitely 36".

I don't think Warmoth makes 36" necks.

How are you measuring your scale length? The standard way is to measure from the bridge side of the nut to the 12th fret, then multiply the distance by 2.

I measured directly from the bridge to the nut. I will do it your way when I get home to make sure.
