Individual String Bridges

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey out there,
I recently got a custom 6 string neck thru and it has individual string bridges. I consider myself pretty good with bass setups but I cant even figure out how to set the intonation on these things? It isn't the tradition screw in the back type system. P.S. it is all allen wrench based.

I prefer the added control that comes with bridges that allow individual setup of each string. Sounds like you've done setups before? It's really the same thing, except you have the capacity to set the individual string heights without affecting the other strings. On a six string that is a big bonus, because of the large difference in string diameter from top to bottom string.

Whatever you do, make sure you use the proper size allen key to make your adjustments. You should be able to pick up a few at your local guitar shop. Or you can go to Sears or a hardware store. The worst thing you can do is round out the holes where the allen key goes. Then you can't adjust it period, and it will need to be replaced. Also, when you oil your fretboard, put a drop of oil on each of the screws so they don't sieze up. I like to use key oil for woodwind instruments, but that's a personal preference.

Hope that helps.

Each monorail bridge assembly probably has 1-2 allen screw sitting behind the actual string saddle. They're also probably installed at a ~45 deg. angle. Loosen the screw(s) and the saddle assembly should slide back and forth within the channel. Tighten when completed with intonation.

Good guess for not having a pic. Let me know how close I was!

Thanks guys! I didn't know that I had to manually slide the saddle to set the intonation. I knew how to loose the saddle but i did'nt know if there was a screw to pull it towards the strap button. ok, so for a new question. how will i accuritly pull the saddle back with the string under full tension? an answer other then "carefully" would be appreciated.

If the bridge saddles grooves are cut correctly, you should not meet too much resistance. It's a matter of trial-and-error...and a lot of retuning. I had one bass where I had to tap the saddle into position with a small tack hammer and a chopstick. Don't laugh, it really works.

thanks! that is the kind of practical, "make it work" advice that I was looking for.
