Insane battle basses

Okay, I can't build a bass from the ground up, so that's why this isn't in Luthier's Corner...

I've always wanted to go find something that was once nice, but beat to-hell-and-back that I could do to it what The Humungus did to a F-100 in Mad Max 2. Basically, a Frankenstein bass that looks like it was put together by a homicidal cyborg that only had access to junkyard parts.

Am I insane or has anyone else had this idea?

Do you mean steampunk? A search for "steampunk guitar" or "steampunk bass" on google images might give you some of what you're looking for.

Steampunk is different, though... it's more like Terry Gilliam's Brazil and less like Mad Max.

yeah, "steampunk" is more of a "victorian sci-fi" aesthetic, like giant dirigibles and steam-powered robots.

we're talking about a post-apocalyptic "road warrior" vibe;

i dunno, ammo clips, random buckles and straps, maybe a knife holster, all spray-painted flat black?

I think things like that have been done, but go for it -- it'd be easy to come up with something pretty unique.

But I do think this is a luthier topic -- you'll find folks in that forum with great design ideas to get you started...

I know what you mean. Don't forget that all-important "road warrior" item, the adjustable wrench dangling from a carabiner. Or maybe two. or better visegrips! And hey, how can one live the post-apocalyptic life without a mostly-used roll of duct tape?

Yeah the "road warrior" vibe is one of my favorites...except for those parts with Tina Turner in it...

Hint: Don't expect to fly with your bass!
