Installing the bridge cover plate on a P bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I did a search without luck, so don't bash me.

What is the proper way of installing the bridge cover on a 62 American Vintage P bass? Will this devalue my bass in any way? Are there any no-no's?

I don't know of any better way than to take a look at some other basses, then install yours by eye. Tape over the spots where you drill the pilot holes to reduce paint cracking. (But don't use tape with adhesive so strong that it will pull the finish off!)

Many vintage P-basses have had bridge covers at one time or another. Value is going to be in the eye of the buyer - suit yourself.

You have a '62 Vintage P bass that doesn't already have the holes drilled for the bridge cover? That's weird, almost all of them I've seen either have the bridge cover or have the holes...so I wouldn't worry about it devaluing the bass any. Eyeballing it is probably the best way to go. Find some pics without the bridge install but still shows the holes, that way you get a real good idea in reference to the bridge.

First, a true "Vintage 62" would have the covers (plural) because all 62s were made that way.

Second, I've added covers to both Ps and Js. I snug the cover up against the bridge piece. Then I make sure that it's plumb (not crooked or out of alignment) and back up just a hair. Then drill the holes and use pickguard screws to fasten. I've never had a problem doing them like this and they add sooo much to the looks.
