Does any body know the ultimate location for the bridge pick-up?

My '04 US has it located 1 13/16" from the edge of the pickup to the edge of the bridge. Ultimate? Opinions abound. I suppose it could be optimized for a particular need. I understand there was SOME science used, but I don't have a deep understanding of it.
