Question Installing and setting up a Status graphite neck - experiences?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm about this close (read: about 4 clicks away) to ordering a Status J-bass replacement neck for my MIM Fender Jazz, and I'd thought I'd check in here first for some experiences about installing them.

I know that some of you have replaced your wooden necks with graphite, and especially with Status graphite. So... let me know what I should expect and take into consideration (in addition to taking the package to a professional, that's still is an option in my book).

Thanks.

Mt experience is installing Moses graphite necks. It was a perfect fit on my Musicman. Moses urges using threaded inserts and bolts rather than screws to hold on the neck.

That's the only tricky part-installing the inserts accurately. You really should use a drill press to drill the holes and you must mark the holes precisely before drilling. If you haven't done it before or lack the tools and ability to use them easily, then your best bet is to get a pro to do it. I would think you could get it done for $60 or less.

With Moses necks, you can buy the threaded inserts and machine bolts from them. They also will send along a little tool for screwing in the inserts if you ask.

I don't know what Status does, but I'd ask when ordering. It can sometimes be hard to find inserts in small quantities in some places, at least the threaded on the inside and outside type suitable for graphite. You wouldn't want to use the type that are used for rougher woodwork that you pound into place with a hammer.

If you do it yourself, buy some extra inserts and practice on a small scrap of maple or very hard wood. Some types of inserts won't come out again so you want extras. I also used inserts to mount a replacement neck on my P bass.

So, this is a 4 year old thread but I'm really curious to see how it went!

Did you get the Status neck? Is it a good replacement?

I am working myself up to building a Frankenbass with a P body and a Status fretless neck...

Whoa, it's weird to see your old thread popping up all of a sudden!

I ended up taking my bass & the neck to a local tech/luthier, who did an amazing job installing it (+ he underestimated the time/cost, but stayed in the original pricing after all ). After that I took the bass there a couple of times more, to get a new bridge & tuners installed. I've been using, abusing & gigging it ever since.

The neck itself is excellent in finish & durability. No flaws, solid frets & there's no hassle in maintenance (just wipe it clean). The radius is a bit flatter than what I like nowadays, but I can live with it without any problem - otherwise it's perfect. Stays in tune forever.

So yes, IMO it's an excellent replacement for a wooden neck.

Talking

Thanks for this. Really appreciate the feedback.

I heard about Warmoth.com yesterday (on TB) and ever since, I've been fantasizing about a pair of P bass bodies, gloss clear finish over maple (or maybe swamp Ash), P/J pups, black P-style pickguard, chrome hardware. One with a fretted and the other a lined fretless Status Graphite P-bass replacement neck....

Ooohh. Gives me goosebumps!

I'm afraid that I'm gonna wear their website out.

One day!

cheers
