Intermittent Distortion, the bad kind

My Fender Bassman 200 just loves to surprise me with this once or twice a month. Generally, I take the amp section of the combo out and set it on top, and that's usually the fix action. It really dumbfounds me, as I then can't check connections or jacks, even though I've done visuals and cleaned them.

Shooting in the dark, really. Doesn't matter how the amp is set, which cables or instrument I use.

Suggestions are very welcome.
