intonation on 24 fret bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello everyone,
Though anyone with a Zon VB4 may be able to better answer this question, I'm sure some of you experienced players would be able to help me out whether or not you have the same bass as I do...I have been playing for a quite a while but am hopeless when it comes to setting up my bass. I have found that on my 24th fret, the note is very flat on the G and D string and sharp on the A and E string. It actually gets consistently flater/sharper from the 20th fret onwards... Any recommendations on how to sort this out? I would really appreciate it!
thanks
Brian

It just sounds like the intonation is off. Grab a tuner, tune all the strings. Then for each one, play at the 12th (or 24th) fret. If the note is sharp, adjust the bridge saddle away from the neck. Then, retune the string (moving the bridge saddle changes the string tension), and repeat the process until the note is perfect. If the note is too flat at the 12th of 24th fret, move the bridge saddle closer to the neck. Again, retune, repeat the process.

Actually, if the note is too flat at the 12th or 24th fret, move the bridge saddle closer to the neck.

Here's a link for ya:

Thanks guys. Would it make any difference that this bass has a detunable bridge? I do all the tuning by the bridge of the instrument so can I still move the bridge forward and back?

I must be hopeless with a search engine because I looked for 15 minutes and couldn't find anything better than the picture on the Zon site. I hope someone can come to rescue...

Just remember, fretted instruments are NEVER perfectly in tune with every fret every note.
