Issue with tuning gear (needs new part)

Sign in to disble this ad
On my bass, the tuning gears have this kind of plastic spacer that seems to hold a rather important role. Of course, one of them broke on my D string tuner and I cant seem to figure out where to get a replacement for it. In theory it should be easy to replace if I can find one. It's quite annoying because the tuning key is now a little lose and while it still works, its noticeably worse than the others.

Any idea of where I can get a replacement spacer? I really don't need to replace the whole tuning key, I can just put on a new spacer, so yeah.

See attached image: The circled bit is the missing spacer. You can see what it should look like from the other 4 good tuners.

Take one off and take it with you to your local hardware store, look for nylon washers.

Okay, we may be in luck. I've got two sitting on my computer desk but I can't be sure which is compatible with the tuner post diameter. Here's what I can do: PM me with your address. I'll mail both so you can size them up. Keep the one that fits / works and mail the other back to your's truly. Howz that sound?

Thanks so much for sending out the spacers, but as you suggested in the PM, it might be best to check a hardware store. The smaller of the two spacers that you sent fit alright, but it was a bit too small as far as width goes and didn't visually match the others at all. Not a big deal, but I figured that instead of wasting it by using it for something it really doesn't need to be used for, I'll send both back.

I'll be sure to take off one of the good ones and take it to my local hardware store to attempt to find a duplicate.
If I'm successful, I'll be sure to post the exact specifications, as I'm sure that a lot of people with ultralite tuners similar to mine may experience a similar problem.

I don't think those are ultralites (unless they are the Gotoh Res-o-lites, in which case, I'm very jealous). Regardless, that would be good information as gotoh-style tuners are extremely common.

You might also contact Hipshot. They make a direct Gotoh replacement that probably even uses the same washer.

They don't have a brand on them, so they're definitely OEM to Ibanez, but nonetheless, they feel amazingly high-quality and they're in the same style as the ultralights (dimensions etc). So yeah.
