One night in 1969, in a very crowded bar in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the G on my Jazz snapped during the 3rd set of a 5 set night. I replaced the string with another Fender Flatwound, and about 2 songs later, the nut cracked, and the G was no longer usable. I had no backup bass (who did, then?). I had probably put an M gauge G on an ML gauge nut slot.
I got to the end of the set and was pretty "bummed-out," as we used to say. Then, I remembered I had a very sharp old pocket knife in my bass case. We had a 20 minute break, so I had to work fast.
I popped out the broken Fender nut (luckily it came out cleanly). I took my black Ace pocket comb from the back pocket of my Levi's. Within 20 minutes, I had carved a new nut. It was pretty ugly, but worked perfectly. The pressure of the strings kept it in place. I think it was still on the bass when I sold it.
