Jay Turser Stingray 5 Question(s) - Help

Sign in to disble this ad
I picked up a Jay Turser Stingray 5 copy for dirt cheap last week - let's just say the previous owner didn't take very good care of things...

After some polish, neck and action adjustment and a new set of decent strings, the thing plays fantastic. However, the pickguard is cracked/broken and is about to come off (or fall off). Has anyone ever replaced the pickguard on this model? If so - where did you get one that fit?

I've looked at some on eBay, but I'm reluctant to pick one up, in case it doesn't fit. And making my own isn't my second choice (terrible with tools).

I'm also thinking about replacing the stock pup - any recommendations?

Difficulty level: I'm on a semi-limited budget (GAS attack and an effects splurge has depleted the kitty a bit).

Thanks in advance!

Well, unless someone is parting one out, you are stuck with remaking your own. Try Stewmac, if they don't have what yu want, try Warmoth and from there, Google is your friend....

BTW, I have a Turser Beatle bass copy. Absoluetly supprising in its quality and sound. And for $249.00 I've made bigger mistakes with that amount of money, I'm here to tell you!

My Google-fu has been weak lately - I've been hacking at it for a couple of days now, without any success...:/

That's once of the reasons I picked it up - I happened to stumble into a local Guitar Center and saw it hanging - wasn't even in the market for a 5, but the price tag ($129) intrigued me. It needed a bit of love, but it sounded great, so for the price I thought I'd take on the restoration project. A few hours tweaking the neck and the action, and it plays incredibly. And I'm really impressed with the sound and the bass so far.

You can have a PG made to match by one of the custom PG companies - but it will cost you half as much as you paid for the bass. Perhaps the Stew-Mac route will work. There's info on the web about how to make your own PGs if you look around.

If it's a stingray copy, why doesn't the regular stingray PG work? Pots in the wrong place? Never knew JT made a stingray copy, but now I'm curious.

It's this one: http://www.jayturser.com/jtb-445m.php.

The one I purchased is black (with white guard) and the top tuner placement was 'corrected' - so they all face the 'right' direction. The guard "looks" about right, but I don't have a way to decisively tell that it will fit over the pickup. When I picked the bass up, the only Stingrays they had were the 5 strings, with the extended pickguard, so that was no help.
