Jazz bass fret problem

Sign in to disble this ad
The first fret on my MIA jazz is muting my open A string. This just started happening. I raised the string at the bridge considerably, but this didn't help too much. Any suggestions as to how to fix this? Thanks.

Make sure the string is wound around the post as far down (close to the headsock) as possible, so it has enough downward pressure on the nut.

You can see if this is the problem by pressing down on the A string behind the nut and playing an open A note. If the buzz goes away when pressing down ...that is the problem.

Especially if you just changed your strings.

Raise your saddle a bit if you have to. If you just cut down the nut slot to make it deeper, well it looks like you went a bit too far.

The strings have been on a while and i don't think the string is wound too high, but I'll check when I get home. I did raise the saddle, it didn't fix the problem. I made no modifications to the nut. Thanks for your input guys!

Try to put a small piece of paper in the nut slot, under the string, it should raise the string at the nut just a tiny bit, enough to clear the fret. If it solves your problem, go see any good luthier and he'll be able to add material in the problematic slot.

Edit:

If it just started happening, the nut is not the problem, unless you took a chunk out of the nut while changin strings.

What most likely happened is that your neck moved and you don't have enough relief anymore so open strings, might buzz against the first few frets. Try to give a 1/4 of turn clockwise to your truss rod, if that doesn't fix the problem, put it back where it was.

Another possibility is that the neck wood shrunk somehow and the fret moved, that is very unlikely, if it's the case, you should be able to see it.
