Jazz bass pickup installation and parts

Just wondering what the screw right in the middle at the bottom of the bridge pickup cavity is for and if it would make a difference if I take it out, as it stops the foam the holds the pickup from sitting in place properly.

I think it's intended for connecting a ground wire from the pup cavity to the control cavity. You could also connect the pup ground there. If there are no wires connected to it now then it won't make any difference if you remove it.
