Jazz bass...'slight' buzz & harmonic

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone...when playing my D string, I'm getting a 'very' slight buzzing and a harmonic when playing the open string. It's kinda like the string is barely vibrating against a fret. It tends to go away if I raise the saddle super-high, or if I over-tighten the sting (make it super sharp).

I typically do my own setups...but I don't know how to fix this one. It was happening on my G string...so I broke down and took it in. The guy fixed it - but my wife picked my bass up for me so I didn't get to ask him what he did.

I'd like to figure out how to fix this so I don't have to take it in (and wait a couple of weeks) again.

It's a Jazz bass...4-string, BAII bridge, and does have the 3-bolt neck plate w/micro-tilt.

Thanks!

I was noticing a sort of ringing on my highway one jazz tonight doing a setup, on the open D string. couldnt trace any vibrations or fret buzz as the string height is sort of high on it, (i'm not happy with the badass bridge, i cant lower the strings anymore). It sounded like internal feedback of the body or something, inside the body. maybe im cazy.
I can't for the life of me keep the low D (dropped) in tune. this bass is hit and miss with me, but im lovin the sound and feel of it

Most likely it's the string touching the first fret due to the slot in the nut being cut too deeply. Try this: fret the first F on the E string, then tap on the string over the first fret. There should be a little bit of clearance there, my guess is there isn't enough.

Presuming your A fretted at the 5th is pure. Your open D issue might clear temporarily if you push down on the D just behind the nut. That'll prove the nut slot is too low.
