It happens from cleaning, just like a car after a while. If I want to get rid of the swirl marks, I use Meguiars swirl remover. It works wonders.

This topic was discusses recently, perhaps in this forum. I recall that someone recommended the use of "micro-fibre" cloth to minimize swirls.
I avoid scratches / swirls by not cleaning my bass.

I got some sort of Microfiber cloth together with my bass when i got it. It doesn't make swirls and scratches. Not that i can see anyway.

BINGO!!
And if you apply it with a Microfibre cloth, it works even better. The Meguiars is my last step when I'm polishing a poly finish to glass.
