You can keep the brass nut, but a graphite, or derlin(slipstone, to stewmac) would be better, for holding tune, the strings are less likely to snag on the nut this way.
Also of note, the lighter the strings you use, the more the the range on the pulls, I use Thomastic Jazz rounds on one, and they have a very high range.
The strings will stay in tune well, once you break them in. Breaking them in is easy though, just use the bar quiet a bit after installing new strings, and keep retuning every now and then, they'll hold pitch in no time.

Also if you go with Kahler, make sure to get the rear facing saddles, that bass dosn't seem to have a great amount of room behind the bridge.
Edit: Looking again, if you go with Hipshot, the bass will look closer to stock, the bridge seems to be a similar style to Hipshot.

You have a nice bass, learn how to get the tone / pitch out of it with your hands. (Pre-bend & release!)
If you just have to have a bass with a tremolo buy a cheap bass and have it installed. It should sell well on E-bay if you discover you don't like it & you can keep your old favorite.

Installation cost me 215 dollars at my local music shop, they did a great job...all they have to route out is a box underneath the bridge section just deep enough to give the rotating part clearance to move.
I love mine. Its loads of fun, and when people see a whammy on a bass it blows their minds.

The Kahler system is perfect for basses because it requires minimal wood removal which keeps the mass of the instrument intact for the most part.

How about a chord?
An open note?

I remember looking for prices before hand and seeing $400 for a new one!

As for squeals, yes you can, but nowhere near as extreme as a guitar.
