Edit: Looking again, if you go with Hipshot, the bass will look closer to stock, the bridge seems to be a similar style to Hipshot.
I've used both. Hipshots require a ton of routing, has really high string tension, and doesn't seem to have as much range. The Kahler seems to be much better. It has more range, requires minimal routing, and has much less string tension. I'm not impressed with the sustain on either, but I'm using slipstone nuts from Stewmac. The brass or graphite may be better.

I have slipstone on one, and graphite on another, sadly though my slipstone one has dead TI rounds on, so I couldn't tell you how good the sustain is, but my graphite equipped one, has good sustain, but the strings are fairly fresh.

will it mess up the tunings of the other 3 strings if I put a D-tuner on there? i.e will the sudden decrease in string tension on the D make the other three strings go sharp? or flat?

Yes the will, unless you block the trem so it can't tip back, meaning you could only drop the d string, or dive the trem, no pull back, which might be just what you want.
