Keeping Signatures

Sign in to disble this ad
I have two signatures on the back of one of my basses. What can I do to make sure the signatures don't fade or go away, so to say? It's a Yamaha TRB1006 and sign by both Billy Sheehan and Marcus Miller, in case you're wondering.

Preserving the signatures against abrasion is a matter of clear coating the guitar. A pro can spray a compatable clear finish over the signatures and that material will act as a barrier. Fading is a function of the UV resistance or lack thereof of the ink/paint that was used to sign the guitar. Keeping the guitar out of the sun will go a long way toward preserving the clarity of the autographs. I don't know if there is a material that can be sprayed over that will protect against UV.

BTW, signatures generally do not enhance the value of the instrument.

I know this. It's a personal value, not monetary value.

Good question. I don't have an answer but with those two signatures I too would want to be sure they NEVER faded! I am jealous, how did you get them?

Billy did a clinic close by here that I went too, and afterwards, he sign my bass for me.
Marcus sign my bass for me after a concert of his.
Also got Poogie, Bobby, Marcus, and Keith to sign a shirt for me (which I don't wear and don't wash due to the signatures).

Please accept my apoligies. It was not my intent to offend nor disparage. It was meant as a point of clarification for those who do not understand the marketplace.

It's alright. I understand. No harm taken.

I hope these will suffice. Pics of the sigs on the back or the bass, front pics to show the nice quilt, and pics of the headstock/tuners to show the black tuners and chrome HipShot I actually like the chrome with the black

As 202 said, keeping it out of direct light will go a long way. Protecting it from abrasion requires an overspray of a compatible clear coat. Get a pro to do it. Those
marking pen signature can easily be dissolved and ruined by the strong solvents in many spray finishes.

It may sound a little bit like a hackjob, but just get some clear packing tape and put a couple strips over the signatures.

I really like that idea. Sounds good. Will probably end up going with this one. Thanks a lot. Gotta order some copper shielding tape from StewMac anyways and a new fretboard for another bass of mine and a few other things.
