Arrow Knobs for pots with D-shaped shafts.

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello everyone, I'm working on a project bass at the moment and I'm having a hard time finding any knobs which will fit a D-shaped shaft.
The ones I can find are very small and designed for amplifiers or mixers, so I'm curious as to whether anyone here knows where I can find any decent looking knobs which will fit a D-shaped shaft?

Here's a pic of the pot/shaft:

Hi.

^Yep, evil-bay is the most likely source if You can't yank 'em off from stereo recievers and such.

If You want a few, precisely the same knobs, and something totally different from the average-Joe stuff let me know, perhaps we can work out a deal .

Regards

Would the solid shaft knobs with lock nuts work?

Yeah, I had found a couple on eBay, but they seem to be pretty big (both have a 28-30mm diameter) where as the standard knobs on my other basses tend to be something like 20mm or under. However I haven't discarded these as options, I was just curious as to whether anyone knew if there was a better selection anywhere.

The two main options I'm looking at are these:

I'm thinking that for a black/black/maple p-bass with chrome hardware the best option might be the second ones. But the only issue there is that the knobs themselves cost £1.33 but since they come from the US the shipping is £8.78 which for just 2 of the things seems overly excessive. I mean I got a Gotoh 201 bridge shipped from the US for £6 (and I'm sure you lot are aware of heavy those things are).

As to normal knobs with the screw to tighten them on, I had bought a pair of those since they were fairly cheap but once tightened they seem to be off balance, as in when you turn the knob it looks like the knobs aren't centred and they sort of move from side to side as you spin it. Its hard to explain, but at this point I'm almost half tempted to just change out the pots for some with a normal shaft.

it might be easier to just replace the pot with something normal.

otherwise, any set-screw knob should still work, assuming the shaft is still 1/4".

^This

At worst you may need to find a slightly longer set screw, or get one too long and cut it down, or put some kind of shim against the flat.

Seems simpler than finding odd knobs.

Yeah, i figured maybe getting a toothpick and putting part of it against the pot and taping it into place, something like that. The previous owner had just glued some plastic knobs on there but I had to get rid of them to change the pickguard, also they both said tone on them xD But yeah I'll try shimming the shaft and if not replace the pots with something more normal. Also I'm sure that after almost 40 years the bass could do with some new pots.

Telecaster knobs would work. Available in chrome or black.
