Lakland 55-01 buzz on open strings & 1st fret

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I have a Lakland 55-01 & have recently restrung it w/ Lakland nickel strings. I'm no expert on setup but have done a little tweaking & I still have buzz issues on open strings & when fretting the 1st fret. Also, when playing up high on the G string I'm getting the same thing & it's actually "bottoming out" and dampening the string when I bend it. I thought it might be a nut issue... seems that the strings lay pretty close to the neck @ the nut. Aside from taking the thing to a shop and spending $ I don't have right now I am looking for some DIY basic tips and tricks to try. Any and all are welcome! Thank you.

Sounds like the neck could be too straight. You might need to loosen the truss rod a smidge.

Is this a lighter set of strings than the ones they replaced?

Good luck.

hmmm, could be... I will try to loosen it a bit. As far as I know, the strings are the same gauge as the old ones. I'll keep toying with it in the meantime... thanks!

If it's still buzzing you may want to take it to a luthier and see if the frets are even or if there's a bow in the neck but usually a simple tweak of the truss rod should work.

im far from a pro setter upper but first thing i thought was that the new strings are higher tension and you need to tighten the truss rod, cause the extra tension might have caused the neck to bow, making the action way higher in the middle of the neck than down by the nut

which would cause buzz down there but not on the rest of the neck

but im probably wrong, good luck

Assuming you mean that you just restrung it recently, keep it tuned to pitch for a few hours to ensure that you are hearing problems where they count.

If you still get the buzz, and also assuming it didn't buzz before the string change, measure the relief using any of the methods in the setup sticky at the top of the forum.

If the neck is indeed too straight, a simple truss rod adjustment will most likely get you back up and running...
