Question Lefty Neck, Right Handed Bass...

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay so basically, I'm in the process of building a bass currently. I was thinking about necks recently, and how it always seems that low strings have better response when the tuning pegs are further away from the nut. So my question was, "Why not just throw a left handed neck on there, and string it opposite?" So is there anything in a Fender MIM bass neck that would make this a bad idea? Because I want it to be different. Shoot, I might even throw Gotoh Ibanez-Style tuners up there. But would this make a problem for intonation, or truss rod adjustment, and really anything aside from looks?

Hi.

IMHO a lefty neck on a righty looks cool as hell.

You may run in to some problems with some string trees with thicker strings, but it shouldn't be anything major.

Other than that it won't probably make any difference.

I did this with a lefty SX 'geddy' neck. Flipped righty on a plywood body since it was gonna be a project bass anyway.
several combinations later ended up with a carvin j99 in the bridge, SD 1/4lb'er in the neck and hipshot bridge and my own cheesy paint job.
I'm currently working on putting a drop tuner on the top side for a 1+3 arrangement.
I don't really buy into the extra length theory beyong the nut or like some yamaha 5 string bridges , an extra tab length on the B.
I'd already gotten a hipshot HB2 but the footprint of this detuner is too large to allow a straight pull alignment with the string. So, I'm gonna try a HE6C 1/2". Looks like a smaller footprint. and I have yet to drill the hole for that.

One thing I didn't account for is the side dots,, now they're on the bottom. Have to peer over the neck a bit to see hand position. Does have the black blocks however..
