lefty vs righty neck

Sign in to disble this ad
haven't gotten any response from this question which i also raised in the essex mega thread. perhaps it belongs here anyway.

i have a right-handed, four-string ursa (4 inline tuners) with the stock, right-handed neck. i'm considering replacing the stock neck with a lefty, also with 4 inline tuners.

i realize i will have to reverse the nut and i have no problem with doing that, however what concerns me is the possibility the e-string may not be wound long enuff to reach up to the top tuning peg (normally occupied by the g-string).

although i have never really paid too much attention to it when stringing, it seems to me the e-string is shorter than the rest.

has anyone encountered any difficulties of this nature if/when using a lefty neck on a righty body?

thanks!

I play lefty basses with the E string on the bottom and have never had a string that was too short to work yet.

You could always get extra-long scale strings, if "normal" ones aren't long enough.

yeh, i thought of that, but then the first two will likely be too long, thus having to buy two sets of strings for a hundred dollar bass, plus the cost of the additional neck makes that idea cost prohibitive.

hey lug, what strings have you used in those instances? i want to put ecb81 chromes on this one (45-100 flats). this may all sound very trivial, but i'd like to get it sorted out BEFORE i buy another bass just to get the neck, perhaps only to find it won't work as planned...

Get the long set & trim them too-long ones if neccesary(watching this thread because I'd like a lefty-necked righty bass too).

bassteban -

by 'too long' i meant the silk would most likely extend down past the nut. something else i would have to trim and i'd rather not go there, if i don't have to.

i've never done a lefty on righty, so i'm as curious as you are...

You can just try it on your existing bass. take off the G String and start to string up an E string in it's place (don't actually tighten it up). Do you have enough slack?

how about a righty with a lefty neck, and a lefty with a righty neck?

bolt-on's can be fun to play with.

and I also play normally inverted ( E on bottom )

strings are never an issue

So buy a new set. If it works you're gonna need them for your project, and if it doesn't, well, you have a new set of strings that you would eventually need anyhow..

D'Addarios and SITS, normally. I've never had the excess run after the windings ever even be close to being too short. I still have to clip excess off. I wouldn't worry about it at all.
