Lighter tuners for earlier Fender Am Stds.

Tried searching but could not find an answer to this. I have a 03 Am Std. Jazz which I love everything about except the extra weight out at the headstock from the older big covered tuning keys. I have been looking for a lighter replacement, but it doesn't appear that the newer lighter Fender tuning keys are available to purchase, and the Hipshot Ultras are about a 1/2" shorter in total height, so they don't really look very good when mounted (at least to me--I'm not a big fan of the MIM look of the shorter keys). Anybody have a lead on where one can buy the newer tuners, or is there another lighter option for the American Standards that works, and still maintains the height of the clover leaf above the headstock?

I have an 01 Jazz and ran into the same problem. I called Hipshot and there is not a model made with longer stems that fit the Am Std's from that era. I installed and they do work (and the lack of neck dive is great) but I agree, they don't look as good. The model that I got was the HBC6 1/2".

i went with the black schaller "boron" keys that fender used on the deluxe basses of the same time period. they're basically the same size but way lighter (even the screw-down bushing is much lighter).

you'll need to drill two shallow holes for the two locater pins, but otherwise they go right on.

the tricky part is, they have adjustable tension screws that have an annoying habit of falling out, so you'll want to dab a little loc-tite on them and screw them back in.
