A little tip regarding pickup height

Well, this is just me trying to contribute with something helpful. I'm not sure if you'll find something useful in this, but atleast I got a real eye-opener when I first found it out.

I got a Ibanez RD500 Fretless, a bass guitar which I had been unhappy with since I got it. It always had this muddy\brash tone with no detail, and also seemed to come out of tune up the neck no matter what I did.

So, after a while I had tried almost everything... except trying to lower the pickups, which were pretty close to the strings (1\4"). So I lowered my pickups, and guess what?

My fretless finally sang. It got a very clear, sweet voice with a percussive "thump" like an upright, a deep sweet bass, and a refined midrange. I didn't believe it was the same bass! The problems with going out of tune upwards the neck also dissapeared. The problem was that the magnets in the pickups were so strong, that they dramatically affected the string's natural movement.

Just a little tip to those who are unhappy with their tone, and got their pickups very close to their strings.
