Location of strap button on Hofner Club

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up a Hofner Contemporary Club bass. I really like it but it bothers me that the bass wants to roll forward due to the upper strap button being located on the back of the body/neck. Has anyone tried to relocate it on the upper "horn" of the body where most basses have them?

I'm not sure if there is enough material there to hold a screw. I don't jump around or anything when I play but the thickness of the body there might still be an issue. I thought about drilling the hole a little bigger and installing a nutsert but if that doesn't hold then I would have a bigger hole to contend with.

I had the same problem with my Ibanez artcore semihollow i bought, so I purchased one of these.

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.c...ews?sku=369900

It fixed all of the comfort issues i had with playing this bass which the bass wanting to tilt forward, and being a 34" scale and with the button on the back of the neck made it feel like a 36" scale bass, which i really, really struggled to play. Well worth the price for me IMO.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the idea. I'm not sure I see how that would cure the tilting forward issue though. The strap would hook on the same plane as the strap button, wouldn't it?

I have it angled up so the actual hook is about 1" above the neck if you are looking at it straight on.

Depending on the scale of the Hofner (not sure what it is) relocating it may not be desirable like it was for me.

Good Luck!

Nice. Thanks for the pics. I guess just the fact that the strap hooks on in the same direction as it would on a horn mounted strap button that the body would hang straighter without wanting to roll forward. That's a great solution. Thanks for your help!!!!

You are probably right about that with the direction of the strap, but I figured i needed to get the strap button above the center line of the bass to eliminate the roll forward, so hence the angle.

Anyways, two things to be careful of if you go this route.

1. The strap hook does curve in towards the neck, which would interfere with your fretting hand (at least for me) if you were to just run it straight out from the back parallel with the neck, which is the main reason i had to mount it on an angle. Maybe if you could mount it towards the top of the neck heel on the back you could get away with running it parallel, i couldn't.

2. If you do mount it on an angle, make sure you don't mount it at such an angle that it won't fit i your case. I have case that is shaped after my bass and I almost screwed this up!

Good Luck!

Makes good sense about the angle. I looked at my Hofner again and it has a heel that is only about 3/4" deep. I will have to drill the bracket into the body just in from the heel. I am assuming there is plenty of meat there.(Hopefully.) I was thinking of a bracket with a 90 degree bend out towards the end and mount a regular strap button on the bend. I think I'd rather have a strap button than the hook holding my strap. And the case issue is real considering I haven't been able to find one to fit this bass yet.
