Looking for surface mounted tuners.

Sign in to disble this ad
Does anyone know of a surface mounted tuner? I am looking for a tuner that will mount without having to be drilled through the headstock. I am temporarily adding a string to an upright bass and need a tuner that can be mounted inside the pegbox without having to be drilled through from the outside like a standard post and gear tuner. And before anyone asks: yes I know this a BG forum.
I seem to remember a tuner like this but I cant remember who made it. Maybe it was just a dream... If anybody knows what I am talking about please chime in. Thanks.

I really, really doubt you'll find this. There's so much tension that no form of clamp would be feasible.

I don't know if such a device exists, but judging by my pegbox, there isn't too much room for such a tuner.

There is however a few extenders that I've seen on the dark side that possibly could be used for something You described.

If You find what you're looking for, do post it in here also, it may help some BG player to get all weird ideas .

Status Graphite has individual tuning bridge saddles on their Streamline model.

Look under products - headless-units....

Ref. Description 3901 Single-Tuner-Bridge for bass

Would take some monkeying around to make it work for what you want to do. But, it is the only surface mount tuner I've ever heard of.

Thank you. Thats exactly what I am looking for. I have a five string upright so there is more room in the pegbox than normal.

Hi I stumbled on this thread by pure luck, you really should try the double bass side of the board....

The kind of tuner you're talking about definitely does exist, one of the guys in the Toronto Symphony has one on an old converted 3 string bass, and Jacques Gagnon used to make and sell them before his business went belly up. The machines went inside the pegbox, and had a hole in the center for one of the existing machines to pass through. They worked well for crowded pegboxes where adding a machine wasn't too easy. Kolstein's on long island used to import Jacques stuff, they may still have some?

Another possible solution is Eugene Wright's:

Good luck.

Thanks Brent, I will definitely check that out. The problem with the DB side is that for every real answer I would get 13 guys telling me that adding a string to a five string bass is impossible.

Not impossible, just inadvisable...

There is a definite issue about what the added tension might do to your bass. But so long as it's not an old and irreplaceable instrument, it's your bass, and yours to do with as you please.

Good luck,
Brent

Thre's this "holier than thou" attitude that runs deep over there on the dark side, but also there's wisdom unparallell of anything You stumble across over here regarding DB issues.
Finding that wisdom is sometimes hard though .
