I would try taking it off the bass, and carefully dismantling it...at least to figure out where the buzz is being created....might be fixable, might not....but at least you'll know.

The buzz is coming from tuning key going up and down.

Loose Tuning Key Buzz

My G string schaller tuning key keeps buzzing because it is loose. How do I properly tighten it?

This is the type of tuning keys I have : Schaller BML Bass Tuners, Set of 4, Chrome .

There is no screw to tighten the key part, how can I tighten it?

I would guess a screw driver ? I have no idea what yours looks like but with fender, which is what I know, the screw on the gear loosed on occasion. If it is nor like the yamaha style then the screw on the top of the tuning key.

You have to remove the spur gear. Under it is a plate that slides under the worm gear and keeps it from rattling, bend it up a bit and re assemble. You'll see what I mean when you get the spur off.

Is this an open gear tuner (Fender style) or an totally enclosed machine?

What part of the tuner is rattling?

That's the same tuner I had on my Jazz and exactly the same problem. I ended up just swapping the set out for other tuners, buzz is gone!

The part that is buzzing is the large key part before it connects onto the pole that has the threads. I have tried tapping it in, but my efforts were futile.

That is where the rattle takes place.

This is an easy fix.
  1. Clean tuner
  2. Degrease tuner.
  3. Apply one drop of CA glue to button at shaft.

If done correctly the one drop will wick into the joint. There will be no clean up.

Ohhhhhhh....I get it now.

Try solder.....or super glue/locktite

or...take it to a good spot welder. (best fix)

Other than that....there is no screw to fix there....

What 202dy said. This is a job for super glue, the thin variety, available at any hobby store. Get the thin stuff so it will flow into the gap. Wait a few minutes, done.

I see, well that is commonly called the button! (in six string guitar land, banjo land, etc.) I had thought the entire shaft was rattling. At the narrowest part, where it first meets the shaft, a little closer to the gears from where your pencil is, Give the edges of the button plate a gentle yet firm squeeze with some pliers with tape on them first and then a wee bit of CA like the others say.

I degreased with acetone, and carefully applied instant krazy glue (a type of CA). It works for now, and I believe that this will hold for many years. Thanks guys!
