Lowering the knob on a push/pull pot?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just modded my G&L Tribute L-2000 with a push/pull pot. It works well, but the bottom of the knob is about 6 mm from the body, whereas it'a 1-2 mm for the other knobs. Aesthetically, it bugs me.

I know I can't really lower the pot much. However, I was wondering about modifying the knob itself. The split shaft seats into a plastic insert in the knob. Does anyone know if:

-I can remove the insert w/o completely mangling it
-I can trim it down so it seats deeper in the knob
-I'd be able to get the modified insert to stab inside the knob?

Any advice/experience/other ideas would be welcome.

Unscrew the nut off the pot, pull it back through into the cavity, pad the shaft with a few washers & put it back on, screw up & hey presto - lower pot!

That was my first thought. Unfortunately, the pot is already seated about as low as possible while still have the nut remaining secure.
