Machinehead isn't tightening the string...

Sign in to disble this ad
I decided to dig out my first bass a couple of days ago and I restrung, or tried to, the bass.
All the strings but the D string tightened. I checked all the parts of the bass and the machinehead itself and there appeared to be no problems.

So does anyone know what the problem might be? It's not worth putting a new machinehead on as the bass is terrible and I really only want it for noodling about on.

Any help?

Is the string slipping on the tuning post? That's what it sounds like to me.

I had this problem on a closed machinehead. When I tried to disassemble it, it fell into pieces. Well, I assembled it back carefully, tightened everything and it worked

Either the string is slipping on the peg due to not being properly inserted in the peg center and wound over, or the gear mechanism of the tuner is not working. Of the two, slipping string is much more likely.

Third possibility: if the string is separating and pulling apart this might happen, but a few turns on the tuner would snap the string.
