Makin' a PJ question

Hey All,

Ive got this Squire P, and got it set up perfectly with Chromes.

I'm going to put in a better P pickup than stock. Keeping it classic 60's for the most part......well sort of..... After this I'm going to have a Jazz pu route done.

Is there a best location to put in the bridge pickup? Or is thee only one best location? I'll be putting in an AG 4J-60.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

you have 3 choices,
60's
70's
or any other location behind the P pup, may it somewhere between the 2, or ridiculously close to the bridge. you get what I mean.

The closer to the bridge, the weaker signal but more upper end. It's a challenge to get the PJ combination to work with passive electronics, usually the J is more like a harmonic enhancer for the P pickup.

Interesting... Maybe I should re-consider. Just get a better P PU, and see if that does it enough for this need. I do like the idea of going PJ, but maybe it's not worth the effort in terms of practacality (not nailing the right spot). Hmmmmm....

I'm not a big fan of a "passive" PJ. For me, unless I had both pickups full on it didn't work very well.

I would first replace the stock pickup with a better P pickup and better pots/wiring, first.

Yeah, I'm leaning in that direction. While they're not overly popular, I'll be putting in a an AG 4P-60, which from what I can tell on reviews may be just like a 62 Fender RI.

What do you think, 250 CT's? I'm not really going for over the top grind (which I hear can be dialed in with 500K pots, and the right cap).

Why not pick up a real '62RI pickup?

I've seen used ones on fleaBay ridiculously cheap. My favourite "vintage wind" P pickup...

If you want the same sound, but a little smoother and fatter, the Nordstrandt is terrific, too.
