Will it harm a 5 string bass to leave the B string off?

Probably not, but it would look awfully strange. It would be better if you traded the 5 for a 4.

Do you need a new nut or bridge? For looks sake yeah, but functionality wise my friend has one and its fine.

Yeah I took my B off my old 5 string and it was fine. Give it a whirl, you may like it.

Strictly a tensison issue for the neck. Talk to a luthier. Other than that; your preference. Why have a 5'ver in the first place???

First off, how would taking the top string hurt anything?

Second, thats rediculous. If you have a 5 string play it with 5 strings or else get a 4 string.

taking the B string off will reduce tension in the neck, causing it to bow back. with anything but a very stiff neck i believe you'll need a truss rod adjustment to make it work.

my cort curbow 5 has been a 4 for about 6 months now, still plays wonderful. im selling it and see no need to pay 30 bucks for a new set of strings im not going to play on.

frankly, a B string as a thumbrest is really nice.

I'd restring it EADGC, so it doesn't look weird, has the proper tension, and has the E as the low string.

I would worry that the lower tension on one side might cause the neck to twist a little.

+1 (if looking really dumb isn't already enough motivation not to do it)

+1 Infinitely more utilitarian approach, and would not look funny either.
