Bear in mind that you won't get many (if any) useful replies unless you are moderatly specific. Seeing as you want to build YOUR bass, you want to make it how you like it.

Also my most recent bass project was for a GCSE course, and on a tight budget I got the main parts for £100 (neck, bridge, tuners, mahogany and screws).
I had pots etc already so expect this figure to go up.

What kind of shape? Number of strings? Wood? What kind of tone are you looking for?
There are a lot of experts here, but they can't decide these things,

Good Luck

my budgets probably like around $500
i was thinking of using like maple or ash for the body
I'm trying to model it from the fodera imperial 4 string but i might make like a j bass
and i'm looking for a good jazzy tone

Are you wanting to make your own bass just to make it, or are you thinking you're going to make your won cheaper than buying a decent one?

If its the latter I urge you to visit http://rondomusic.net and find something inexpensive yet VERY usable for $200 or less.

Remember, its just as easy (if not easier) to build your own design, as it is to copy someone elses.

I wouldn't suggest maple for the main part of the body, and ash is quite a good wood to choose for a jazzier sound.

You'll find LOTS of good reading in the Luthier's scetion here. I suggest you read a fair number of posts & post slightly specific questions there.
