Making your own fretboard

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone, i am working on making my own five string and i am curious to how critical the fret spacing needs to be. I have them laid out to the 0.01 of a MM. i am wondering if i end up being off by, say 0.05 mm, if it will really throw off the sound of the finished guitar.

Thanks

This should be posted in the Luthier's corner.

Hi.

Welcome to TalkBass.

Cutting the slots with 0.05mm accuracy is hard enough, I don't see any problems if You can accomplish that.

If You're measuring the slot positions, avoiding any cumulative errors is essential to a successful fretboard.

Regards
Sam

The mods will move this thread, just give them a bit time.

Double posting will only get one of the threads closed.

Why should they move the thread? Making and replacing fingerboards is a normal part of the repair business. There are several regulars on this board who are knowledgeable in the mechanics of this service.

Laying out the cuts is one thing. Making them accurately is another. Do you have a fixture with a template, like the LMI version?

You should ask Mikeyswood, he's got a good link for fret template.

Or you might want to read this.

You're welcome, another thing you can do is purchase a fret template from Stew Mac or Lmi.

Good luck.

While that's true, measuring and fabricating a fret-board is more of a luthiery topic than a setup/repair topic, methinks.

The reply was mainly to discourage double posting though. Double posting is regular, and sometimes accepted practice in quite a few forums I visit and the TB way has made me realize what a PITA double posting really is.
OP being new here, he might not have known.

Sam
