I have a Yamaha bass with a Maple Fretboard..
The sound is a little bright and boxy for my likeing. If i spray the fretboard with several coats of laquer or something, will that beef up my sound.
I love the bass, it really plays great and i don't want to get rid of it.
I use rotosound string will flatwound help?

Nothing you can do to the neck material itself will change the sound to your liking. You've described fairly accurately the characteristic sound of a maple/maple neck. To get what you want will require (IMO) a change to a fretboard of rosewood or some other "softer" material. That's how these types of necks get their warmer tone.
You might also do some experimentation with string selection as another method to warm up your sound. Take a gander at the "Strings" forum for some good recommendations.
