Marcus Miller pickup cover?

Does using a chrome pickup cover over the neck pickup on a jazz bass like MM does effect the tone?and if you earthed the cover also,do you think this would effect the tone?OR is it purely a hand rest?

IMO purely a hand rest. I'd like to try one out but I can't find one wide enough for a Jazz V in black

Just a hand rest. I've played both the ones I've had, covers on and off, and noticed no difference whatsoever. If there is a difference, I doubt anyone would notice.

Legend has it, covers used to serve a purpose to shield pickups from various electrical sources like stage lights or early flourescent systems. Lighting systems have evolved so there's no need for pickup covers. However, I get signales from my TV remote if it gets near my bass.

Hmmm. I've used an AM radio to test my remotes but never my bass. Neat.
