Michael Kelly Firefly - Repair loose strip

Sign in to disble this ad
Folks,
I have a 4-string Michael Kelly AEB.
If you look straight into the body through the soundhole, there's a strip that runs the center of the body.
It appears to support the seam where the halves of the back are joined.
It's lifted from the back and I think I'll have to re-glue it.
I am looking for any gotcha's as I've not reglued or repaired any bracing before.
I'm thinking a standard wood glue would work. As for bracing while the glue dries, I think just wedging in a short wood dowel would suffice.
Any tips or things I need to be mindful of?

Thanks!

Tite bond 2 or any good wood glue will work fine. (No White glue!)

Lift the brace as much as you can with a thin narrow scraper and put a fair amount of glue on a strip of paper and slide it repeatedly under the brace. You may have to repeat this several times to get enough glue under there to make this work. Press the brace down with your hand and wipe off any glue squeeze out with a damp paper towel. you should get some glue to squeeze out, if not you didn't use enough. Lay the bass flat on it's back and then put something heavy through the sound hole to hold the brace down while the glue dries.

For what it's worth, I've had to repair many micheal kelly acoustic basses over the years and have not been impressed at all by their workmanship. They seem to put more into the looks and fancy inlay work thean they do the construction and quality of their instruments. If one brace popped up it's a good chance another will do the same thing.

Keep it away from extreme dry heat, cold or humidity.

Good luck!
