Mighty Mite Fret Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Ordered a new MM P-bass neck and got to wondering if I have much to do to the frets - especially where they come to the edge of the board.

Are they gonna be pretty good or need a lot of trimming and filing to get them right?

I've done a few MM necks now. Usually I take a half hour and do a minor fret dress. So far, once that was done, they rocked. They were OK out of the box but that half hour made them way better than OK... For the dough, those MM necks are a steal IMO.

Yeah - it SAYS they are pretty good in the wire-shaping department - but advertising boilerplate is always a little enthusiastic --- if you know what I mean.

Thanks.

BTW: can they take a little rolling-off at the edges or are they not gonna like that?

Total greenhorn here so I'll most likely screw up the terminology, but I just got a MM j neck with rosewood fb early this week and both ends of the fret wire stuck past the edge of the board enough my hand would catch on every one of them on both sides. The good news was the rosewood was also just an RCH proud on both sides so there was a small amount of practice wood to take off before it got do or die serious. It took about a half hour with a file and about half that much more sanding to get a good edge on both sides. My goal was to make it look as much like the edges of the neck on my MIM jazz as I could and it came out much better than I expected it to. I wish I could leave it raw, but after reading the info on Warmoth's site about raw maple necks I'm boning up on finish types and techniques.

Ummmm.

I rolled the edges on my VM-Jaguar - bound and blocked/rosewood - and it came out just fine. This has given me the desire to do it to the new MM neck too.
